Newbridge supports the ENCOMPASS protocol which operates in Leicestershire.

Operation Encompass is an initiative that enhances communication between the police and schools where a child is at risk from domestic abuse and joins up information sharing by the involvement of children social care.

The purpose of the information sharing is to ensure schools have more information to support safeguarding of children. By knowing that the child has had this experience, the school is in a better position to understand and be supportive of the child’s needs and possible behaviours.

This means that if there has been an incidence of violence in the home or that the child has been involved in/witnessed, a senior member of staff from social services will phone Mrs Farragher (as Designated Safeguarding Lead) the following morning.

Without giving details, this will alert the DSL to the child’s potential needs.

A DSL will ensure that the child knows that school has been informed, so that they can be told what support is available for them should they want it.

Social services is likely to contact the DSL again in the future to conduct a “welfare check” .

Operation Encompass complements existing safeguarding procedures.
